British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
