A defense minister has revealed that the MoD is currently looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for Defence Staff
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader security situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official activities, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
